Nutrition and the Land

At The Balsam School, we take a holistic and interconnected approach to food, health and nutrition. From parents packing healthy, fresh lunch and snacks each day, to our deepening connection with agriculture through our relationship with Helen’s Acres, our students not only learn farm to table, but also from earth and culture to heart and mind.
Our primary students (K/1s) begin with “Chefs Cafe” and where they, “Meet your food before you eat your food. ” They learn about farming, markets, kitchen skills and table manners.
Next our elementary students (2/3s) explore the “Anywhere Farm,” and explore the use of tower and rooftop gardens and micro greenhouses with lights. Topics covered include, plant anatomy from seed to stem, biodiversity and edible/indigenous plants.
Our Intermediate students learn to become “Soil Stewards,” as they spend their Thursdays at Helen’s Acres. They explore land based learning and service work. Making deep connections with community service partners like the food bank and Mamas4Mamas, while also learning the science of food waste with our corporate partner LOMI.

Arts & Athletics

Athletics and early skill exploration are important components in the development of each student at The Balsam School, as they learn the basic rules and strategies of different sports, but also how to work together, lead, and practice good sportsmanship. The Athletic program emphasizes active participation of students at all skill levels. Under the guidance of skilled and supportive coaches, our athletes develop the mental and physical skills needed to help them succeed on and off the field.
Expressing oneself through music, art, and drama is a fundamental part of a full and well rounded education. At The Balsam School, these experiences aren’t seen as extracurriculars or add-ons, but are core elements of the curriculum that are critical to building students’ creativity and self-confidence.
One of the unique features of our Arts program is that we have Kelowna’s Premier children’s theatre company, Pixie and Dot (pixieanddot.ca), as our Artists in Residence! This wonderful and talented company supports our drama program and is key to the quality of our Christmas and Winter Celebration each year!

Clubs & Activities

Mid-day and after-school clubs offer our students a unique opportunity to expand their horizons, discover new passions, and build valuable skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. These programs not only complement academic growth but also foster social, emotional, and physical development in a fun, engaging environment.
These programs offer more than just a way to pass the time; they equip students with essential life skills that extend beyond the classroom and prepare them for future success. At The Balsam School, we are committed to providing a wide range of clubs that cater to diverse interests and talents, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.
